Today is Monday, 3 May 2024.
Close to 90% of the Earth's total human population lives in the Northern Hemisphere. This is about 7 billion people.
This also means that while the remaining 1 billion people that lives in the Global South prepares for 2024’s Winter, Summer is almost there in the Northern Hemisphere. Just like headlines about scorching temperatures in India, updated wildfire season projections for Canada and that Europe is warming almost twice as fast as the rest of the world.
This last information about Europe was released last April in a joint report from the World Meteorological Organization and Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), the Earth observation unit of the European Union's space program. We refer to the “European State of the Climate 2023”.
With this report, as an aggravation of what was seen in terms of forest fires in 2023, the European Union has already taken measures to reinforce and be better prepared to what lies ahead.
According to an article by the European Commission, for 2024 556 firefighters from 12 countries will be strategically prepositioned across key locations in Europe this summer, such as in France, Greece, Portugal, and Spain. Besides, there will be a dedicated rescue fleet of firefighting aircraft consisting of 28 airplanes and 4 helicopters stationed in 10 Member States.
