Indonesia Launches Carbon Exchange to Support Net Zero Emissions Goals.
On 26 September 2023, Indonesia officially launched its carbon exchange. As such, the country marks a significant milestone in the commitment to addressing climate change, promoting sustainable environmental practices and maintaining the country’s carbon ecosystem.
Indonesia, together with Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo are home to 52% of the world's remaining tropical forests, critical regions in the fight against climate change. Recall this post from late 2022 "OPEC for rainforests: Brazil, Indonesia and the DRC united for their carbon credits".
And while Brazil and Congo prepare similar steps, Indonesia’s carbon exchange is expected to be one of the world’s largest and most important carbon exchanges due to the volume and diversity of carbon units traded.
Carbon trading will be carried out in stages by ensuring quality carbon units, beginning with emissions (Emission Trading System/ ETS) in the electricity and forestry sectors.
Indonesia Stock Exchange was given a business license by the OJK. OJK regulates and supervises carbon trading through carbon exchange in Indonesia. More details in this post from last August "Carbon World News: Indonesia Carbon Exchange arriving".
