Carbon markets are growing, and Africa with a huge potential, according to United Nations body. And Japan is ready to get there first.

Today is Thursday, 25 July 2024.

United Nations bodies are clearly focusing on African projects that generate carbon credits.

See for example this Advocacy Brief on Carbon Markets focusing on opportunities for Africa published last June 2024 by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Carbon markets are growing, and Africa has unrealized potential … Africa coming second in terms of carbon credit market volume … UNDP is seeking partnerships … to collaborate on carbon markets”.

Two days ago we posted about the growing demand for carbon offsets in Japan. And Japan already has a bilateral Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) and close to 30 partner countries with formal agreements signed since 2013.

Japan’s JCM consists in a system to cooperate with developing countries for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, under which the amount of emission reduction is assessed as contribution by both partner countries and Japan. Click at the image below to read more at the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA).

As you will see, from Africa there are only 4 agreements under Japan’s JCM, being Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal and Tunisia.

Last May 2024 the report “Recent Developments of the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM)” was published, including a clear reference (page 21) to another UN programe, UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

JCM support programme by UNIDO … Purpose: Targeting JCM partner countries, mainly in the African region …”

If further interested in Japan’s JCM, below you can also download the 20 pages report “The JCM 2023-2024. Introduction of the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) & Financing Programme for JCM Model Projects”

Japan, a 125 million inhabitants rich developed country, has very particular geographical and historical characteristics, like briefly mentioned in this post from September 2023. It is a country slightly smaller than the state of California, in United States.
