Monday, 27 January 2025.

Davos Debrief, COP30 governance, US private sector and the Paris Agreement, no new NDCs, CORSIA wants more after the success of Guyana's forests, new and innovative methodologies for carbon credits in India, Climate Change Council in São Paulo, and general and educational topics such as Climate-Smart Agriculture, and a great Climate Dictionary. See below 🔔.

Davos Debrief. The World Economic Forum meeting in Davos 2025 focused on collaboration for the "Smart Era," highlighting artificial intelligence, the US economy, gender parity, and diplomacy. Regarding climate change, the discussions focused on mitigation through investments in clean energy, sustainable agriculture, and international cooperation to achieve climate neutrality. COP30 in Belém, Brazilian Amazon. The president and executive director of the conference have finally been appointed. In a context increasingly challenging any leadership in global climate negotiations and in implementing the Paris Agreement, COP30 will be another relevant event. Additionally, it puts the host Brazil in the spotlight not only on deforestation and fires but also on renewable energy, biofuels, and low-carbon agriculture.

United States, Paris Agreement and Private Sector. On January 23, Michael Bloomberg commented on the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement for the second time. Having been mayor of New York for over 10 years, founder and former CEO of Bloomberg L.P., one of the world's leading financial information companies, in his position as UN Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions, he announced that Bloomberg Philanthropies and other US climate leaders will cover the funding gap left by the federal government. He reaffirmed his support for the "America Is All In" movement, a coalition of cities, states, and businesses working to meet the country's climate commitments, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 61-66% below 2005 levels by 2035. Read the official press release.

Update on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). So far, no country has submitted a new NDC in 2025. The same few that did so in 2024 remain.

CORSIA Carbon Credits, new rounds in 2025. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced on January 22, 2025, its intention to hold regular events for the acquisition of eligible emission units (EEUs) in 2025. The goal is to create a robust market for high-integrity carbon credits, allowing airlines to meet their emission reduction targets efficiently and responsibly. The initiative follows the success of the first negotiation involving the government of Guyana, where carbon credits denominated Jurisdictional REDD+ ART Trees Guyana were auctioned at $21.70 per ton.

Carbon Credits, India. 12 new methodologies related to 6 sectors - agriculture, waste, transport, industry, energy, and forestry - have just been put out for public consultation until January 30. See in detail. Spoiler, it includes “Production of Biofuel,” “Methane recovery from livestock and manure management at households and small farms,” “Hydrogen production from electrolysis of water,” and even one on “Modal shift in transportation of cargo from road transportation to water or rail transportation.” As we have reported, among the BRICS, India stands out in the specifications of its Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS).

Brazil, São Paulo, Climate Change Council. In addition to the establishment of this Council on January 22, 2025, to strengthen the resilience of cities against environmental disasters and promote climate change adaptation and mitigation actions, the São Paulo government announced several important initiatives:

1. Encouragement of planting native trees and recovering degraded areas

2. Exemption from licensing for solar energy systems

3. Creation of the São Paulo Center for Radars and Meteorological Alerts, with the unification of information from all meteorological radars in the state for better prediction and response to extreme weather events

4. Climate Action Plan 2050 with the main goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 79% by 2050, and

5. Finaclima-SP, a private financing mechanism for mitigation projects and biodiversity maintenance.

Climate-Smart Agriculture. A December article from the World Bank highlights that Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) aims to promote global practices that ensure long-term food security and environmental sustainability. CSA is an approach with three main pillars:

1. Increasing agricultural productivity by implementing practices that enhance efficiency and food production.

2. Adaptation and resilience through the development of systems more resistant to climate change, such as droughts and floods.

3. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, for example, through no-till farming, efficient fertilizer use, and sustainable soil management.
