Today is Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
As we have been reporting since last COP-27 in Egypt, the Goverment of Japan is leading the so-called Paris Agreement Article 6 Implementation Partnership (A6IP).
Besides Plenary Meetings, a few working groups were formed such as Authorization, Reporting and Tracking.
After Article 6, there is a brand new World for carbon credits, that should not take you - or any Government - by surprise.
As a member of the A6IP, Carbon Credit Markets closelly follows the developments, specially focusing on the Tracking Working Group. Click here to recall what we reported after the 1st meeting from last May 10th.
While a 2nd meeting is expected for the coming days, before COP-28, here are some other recent updates and references. You can click at the titles for more details and access to the presentations.
The meeting was attended by more than 100 partners. The objective was to introduce the A6IP Center (A6IPC), promote regional synergies and scale-up for the Article 6 implementation and explore learning opportunities.
Here are the specific topics covered:
- Introduction of A6IPC and A6 Implementation package support, by the Ministry of the Environment Government of Japan;
- Regional activities Synergies and Scale-up: A6IPC, UNFCCC, World Bank, West African Alliance, Eastern Africa Alliance, Chile, Asian Development Bank (ADB), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and International Emissions Trading Association (IETA);
- Education programme to support implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, by United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS);
- Activities supporting A6 implementation, by UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre (UNEP-CCC).
The objective was to introduce the A6IPC to the sub-group, sharing information about institutional arrangements for Article 6, from partner countries, organizations and promote the development of a tool for authorization.
Topics and status presented:
- Introduction to Authorization, by UNFCCC Secretariat;
- Efforts for authorization from partner countries: Thailand and Zimbabwe;
- Efforts for authorization from supporting agencies: Global Green Growth Institute and World Bank;
- Tool’s preparation from A6IPC.
The objective was the exchange information from partner countries and organizations involved in the reporting and also to promote the development of a tool for reporting.
Topics and status presented:
- Updates of Reporting of Article 6 Capacity Work Programme, by UNFCCC Secretariat;
- Reporting from partner countries: Ghana and Switzerland;
- Reporting from supporting agencies: UNDP, World Bank and Institute for Global Environmental Strategies;
- Tool’s preparation from A6IPC.
