WEF Comments on the EU's Omnibus Proposal.
A few weeks ago, Carbon Credit Markets addressed this proposal, combining several suggestions for changes to the European Union's (EU) sustainability rules. Now it is the World Economic Forum (WEF) that is carrying out the analysis, highlighting concerns about regulatory uncertainty and possible setbacks in efforts and weakening of sustainability standards.
Despite seeking to ease the administrative burden, especially for small and medium-sized companies, there are concerns about the difficulty of adapting to the new requirements, aggravated by the lack of resources or expertise. These challenges could jeopardize the EU's climate and social objectives.
The proposal will be debated in the European Parliament and the Council, undergoing adjustments and public consultations with stakeholders before approval and implementation, with subsequent monitoring to balance administrative simplification and sustainability standards.

CLIMATE GOVERNANCE
SBTi Finally Puts its Corporate Net-Zero Standard to Public Review.
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is an organization that promotes corporate climate action through the scientific establishment of greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.
This review was long overdue and seeks to accelerate corporate decarbonization by:
- Scope 3, addressing significant barriers related to the value chain
- Climate finance, incentivizing it associated with carbon removals and maintaining a focus on emissions reduction
- Emerging economies, facilitating the target-setting process
- Targets, promoting a new validation and monitoring model
Comments received both in the public consultation and from expert working groups and pilot tests will support the proposed changes, before the final approval of the standard. This is scheduled for early 2026.

CARBON CREDITS
Ecosystem Marketplace proposes five disruptive ideas to ensure a fair value for forests in the carbon market.
The article proposes to close the gap between the market price and the real value of forests, promoting greater justice for the countries and communities that depend on them.
In this sense, the text explores innovative solutions, such as pre-payment structures, to increase direct benefits to forest communities and reduce financing costs.
“We cannot achieve climate goals without forests, which absorb almost a third of fossil fuel emissions emitted by humans each year. They are among the most cost-effective climate solutions available. However, financial support for forests remains a constant challenge: carbon credits from the REDD+ program still trade for less than $10 per ton, far below the $30-50 per ton estimated by UNEP as the real cost of large-scale, high-integrity forest protection.”

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
World Intellectual Property Indicators 2024.
The recently published World Intellectual Property Indicators 2024 report highlights significant growth in patents focused on climate technology, with an emphasis on areas such as renewable energy, carbon capture and storage, and energy efficiency.
Patent applications related to solar, wind, and other sources continue to increase steadily, reaching almost 45,000 registrations. Solar energy accounted for more than half (54.4%) of all energy-related applications.
The document points out that countries such as China, the United States, and Germany lead patent registrations in this sector, evidencing robust investments in technological innovation and incentive policies, such as subsidies and tax credits.
Another relevant aspect addressed is the increase in the registration of trademarks related to products, ecological solutions, and sustainable services. This trend reflects the growing demand from consumers for more responsible business practices committed to sustainability.
